How this finance exec built his own profitable company in 18 months

This is Patrick McGonagle a few years ago. Putting in the hours. Earning the big bucks. Cruising. But something was off.

Was this… it?

In mid-2021, a mutual friend introduced me to Pat. I was relocating from Singapore to Sweden the very next day, but we managed a coffee in Raffles Hotel before I flew.

Patrick had a business idea. He had no real plan, definitely didn’t want to give up his lovely salary, but believed deep down that he should start something of his own.

Since then, working with our team here at DQ, Pat experimented, validated, adjusted, then pivoted massively.

And then…

…He began making progress.

Fast forward to now.

In recent weeks, Pat’s Singapore-based corporate services company has:

  • Landed its 63rd happy client (with zero churn)
  • Enjoyed a compounding monthly growth rate of 24%
  • Hired its 5th full-time employee
  • Broken even

Pat has given up the day job to go full time.

This post isn’t to congratulate him, or to blow our own trumpet [we’ve been doing that for months!]…

It’s to show that, no matter how entrenched you feel in your career; no matter how much money you’re earning; and no matter how crazy your ideas may be, YOU are in control of your own destiny…

…And help is out there, if you look for it.

12 years ago, Pat fell into his finance job almost by accident.

Before he knew it, he was driving nice cars, buying expensive suits and living “the good life”.

But over time he realised this wasn’t the life he craved.

So he chose to make a change.

For many of us, careers begin by accident.

But ONLY WE are in control of how they finish.

Nice work Pat – it’s a pleasure working with you.
