Who enjoys the most freedom, entrepreneurs or employees?

Run your own business => never switch off. FALSE. Work for a salary => your free time is your own. FALSE.

We’re all tempted by the idea of working for ourselves… calling the shots. But we convince ourselves the price is too high.

Our income would never be fully secure. We’d never truly switch off.

And yet, I’m just back from a holiday where…

1. The only people taking calls were those who work for someone else.
2. The ones who seemed most relaxed where those running their own small-to-medium-sized companies.
3. One guy drove separately from his wife in case he had to rush back to the office (hint: he is not working for himself).
4. One of the people on the trip spent 18 months looking for their last job, having previously been made redundant.

What’s my point?

This…

If you’re employed by someone else, you probably have no more job security, freedom or downtime than you would if you worked for yourself.

And this…

I’ve met a lot of people, late in their careers, who look back and wish they’d started their own thing.

Don’t get me wrong. Being an entrepreneur definitely isn’t for everyone…

…but don’t let faulty logic be the thing that holds you back.
